I have many interests outside of economics: amateur photography, renovating old houses, traveling, cooking and eating, reading history books, boating, hiking, playing tennis, and spending time with my family. I have taught a dozen different courses during my career at MIT, spanning introductory undergraduate to advanced PhD. My courses have covered topics such as microeconomics, industrial organization, the economics of digital markets, probability, statistics, and econometrics. Most recently, I have served as one of the two instructors for the introductory microeconomics course taken by most MIT undergrads. I am pleased to say that I have won numerous teaching awards, including the Levitan Prize and multiple instances of the Undergraduate Economics Teaching Award. And I also have an award-winning MOOC on data analysis for social scientists that has attracted over 100,000 learners. Click on the menu for more information.
My research has investigated a number of areas in industrial organization (IO), with a recent focus on economic questions in ecommerce and digitization. My contributions have been both substantive and methodological, helping us understand how competition of firms online differs from competition in traditional brick and mortar markets. I have also done extensive work on the economics of the pharmaceutical industry, studying the pricing of prescription drugs, strategic behavior by firms, and many other topics. I currently serve on the boards of four IO journals.
Over the years at MIT, I have served on various MIT committees, covering subjects ranging from student choice of major to online education to campus harassment policies to the organization of research space. I spent several years as the Economics Department Undergraduate Officer and am now the Faculty Lead Director for the Data, Economics, and Design of Policy (DEDP) MicroMasters and Masters programs.
